To raise funds to support the educational programs of the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce.
The Gullah Geechee Chamber Foundation will enhance climate change awareness and environmental literacy amongst BIPOC and frontline communities in coastal South Carolina. By organizing an Environmental and Energy Conference, Gullah Geechee African American, rural, and low-income residents will be empowered to advocate for sustainable solutions to the effects of climate change in their communities.
The Gullah Geechee Chamber Foundation received a $10,000 grant award from the US Energy Foundation to restart the Gullah Geechee Environment & Energy Conversations. Every second Monday, an Environment and Energy Conversation lead by a volunteer moderator showcases an environment or energy organization to the Gullah community. This is an opportunity to introduce the mission, advocacy work of environment and energy group to a broader and diverse audience. The conversations are open to all communities but focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the environmental and racial justice realms.
GEORGETOWN, SC - The Gullah Geechee Chamber Foundation Inc’s proposal entitled, “Promoting Gullah Geechee Maritime Cultural Heritage and Enhancing Economic Resilience through a Gullah Geechee Seafood Trail” has been awarded $283,000 in funding under the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Salton, all-Kennedy Grant Program.
Over the next two years, the Gullah Geechee Chamber Foundation will work with Gullah Geechee communities to preserve maritime stories, anecdotes and traditions along with stakeholders and collaborative partners including the SC African American Heritage Commission, SC SeaGrant Consortium, the Gullah Geechee Nation, and Coastal Carolina University.
The GG Chamber Foundation will provide business education classes for micro-, small- and start-up businesses in the seafood industry and will work with community members to preserve seafood and water traditions of the Gullah Geechee.
